What Do Betting Odds Actually Tell You?

Odds serve two purposes: they tell you how much you'll be paid out if you win, and they imply a probability for that outcome occurring. Understanding both dimensions — the payout and the implied probability — is fundamental to making smart betting decisions.

The Three Main Odds Formats

Decimal Odds (Most Common in Europe & Australia)

Decimal odds represent your total return per unit staked, including your original stake. They're the simplest format to work with mathematically.

  • Odds of 2.00 → Bet $10, return $20 (profit of $10)
  • Odds of 1.50 → Bet $10, return $15 (profit of $5)
  • Odds of 3.75 → Bet $10, return $37.50 (profit of $27.50)

To convert decimal odds to implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100. So odds of 2.50 imply a 40% probability (1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40).

Fractional Odds (Traditional UK Format)

Fractional odds show your profit relative to your stake. The left number is what you win; the right number is what you stake.

  • 5/1 (five-to-one) → Bet $10, profit $50, total return $60
  • 1/2 (one-to-two) → Bet $10, profit $5, total return $15
  • 7/4 (seven-to-four) → Bet $4, profit $7, total return $11

To convert fractional to implied probability: denominator ÷ (denominator + numerator) × 100. So 5/1 = 1 ÷ 6 = 16.7%.

American (Moneyline) Odds

American odds use a +/– system based on a $100 reference stake.

  • Positive odds (+200) → Bet $100 to win $200 profit (underdog)
  • Negative odds (–150) → Bet $150 to win $100 profit (favourite)

The Bookmaker's Margin (Overround)

If you add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market, they'll total more than 100%. This excess is the overround — the bookmaker's built-in profit margin. A typical football match market might have a 105–107% overround, meaning the book's edge is around 5–7%.

Finding value means identifying bets where your assessed probability exceeds the implied probability in the odds. That's the core of profitable betting.

Odds Movement

Odds change between a market opening and the event starting. Sharp movement (e.g., odds on a team dropping from 2.50 to 1.90) often signals significant informed money being placed. Watching how odds move across multiple bookmakers can give you useful information about where the smart money is going.

Which Format Should You Use?

Use whichever format you find most intuitive — most betting platforms let you switch. Decimal odds are recommended for calculation simplicity, especially when computing implied probabilities and comparing value across markets.
