Walking into the world of sports betting for the first time can feel like entering a foreign country. Handicaps, accumulators, juice, push — the terminology can be confusing. This glossary covers the most important terms you'll encounter, explained plainly so you can bet with confidence.
Essential Betting Terms A–Z
A–C
- Accumulator (Acca) — A single bet combining four or more selections. All selections must win for the bet to pay out. Higher risk, higher reward.
- Asian Handicap — A form of handicap betting that eliminates the draw as an outcome, giving one team a goal advantage or disadvantage.
- Bankroll — The total amount of money dedicated to betting.
- Bookie / Bookmaker — The company or person who accepts and pays out bets.
- Chalk — Slang for the favourite in any given market.
- Cover — When a team beats the point spread assigned to them.
D–H
- Dead Heat — When two or more competitors finish a race or event tied, resulting in a reduced payout.
- Double Chance — A market that lets you cover two of three outcomes (e.g., home win or draw) in a single bet.
- Each Way (E/W) — A bet split into two parts: one on the selection to win, one on it to place (finish in the top few positions).
- Edge — A bettor's advantage over the bookmaker — the key to long-term profit.
- Handicap — A virtual advantage or disadvantage given to a team to level the playing field in betting terms.
- Handle — The total amount of money wagered on an event or market.
I–O
- In-Play / Live Betting — Placing bets while an event is in progress, with odds updating in real time.
- Juice / Vig (Vigorish) — The bookmaker's commission built into the odds. Also called the overround or margin.
- Lay Bet — Betting against an outcome (acting as the bookmaker). Available on betting exchanges.
- Line — Another term for odds or the point spread.
- Moneyline — A straight-up bet on who wins, with no spread involved. Common in American sports.
- Odds-On — When the odds are shorter than evens (less than 2.00 decimal), meaning the selection is favoured.
- Overround — The sum of implied probabilities across all outcomes in a market, exceeding 100%. Represents the bookmaker's margin.
P–Z
- Parlay — The American term for an accumulator.
- Point Spread — A margin applied to a game to make both sides equally attractive to bettors. Common in American football and basketball.
- Push — When a bet lands exactly on the line set (e.g., the score difference equals the spread), resulting in a refund of the stake.
- Sharp — A sophisticated, professional bettor whose moves can influence the market.
- Single — A bet on one selection only. The simplest bet type.
- Steam Move — A sudden, coordinated shift in odds caused by heavy betting on one side.
- Teaser — A type of parlay in American sports betting where the point spread is adjusted in the bettor's favour in exchange for lower odds.
- Treble — A bet combining three selections; all three must win.
- Unit — A standard bet size used to measure profit and loss without referencing specific currencies.
- Value Bet — A bet where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome occurring.
- Wager — Another word for a bet.
